These past few years have been difficult for many people. A global pandemic, economic uncertainty, political strife, climate change – the list of worries seems endless. It’s easy to feel drained, unmotivated, even hopeless. But staying motivated during tough times is so important for our mental health and ability to work towards positive change. Here are some tips for keeping your motivation up when times get troubling:

  1. Practice gratitude. Even during hard times, there are always things to be grateful for – your health, loved ones, basic needs being met. Make a daily list of 3-5 things you’re grateful for. This simple act shifts your mindset from lack to abundance.
  2. Limit media consumption. Being bombarded 24/7 with negative news takes a toll. Give yourself a break by limiting time spent watching, reading or listening to the news. Stay informed, but don’t obsess.
  3. Connect with community. Don’t isolate yourself! Spend time with positive people who uplift you. Volunteer, join a club, take a class – strengthening social bonds boosts resilience.
  4. Take care of your body. Eat nourishing foods, get enough sleep, move your body. Caring for your basic physical needs gives you energy and focus to handle challenges.
  5. Find purpose. Devote time to causes or hobbies that provide meaning and purpose. Doing good helps counteract a sense of helplessness.
  6. Be present. Anxiety often arises from dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Counteract this by bringing your attention to the current moment – breathe deeply, observe your surroundings, do a simple task mindfully.
  7. Celebrate small wins. Note any progress made, goals met, good moments – no matter how tiny. Give yourself credit to counteract self-criticism.
  8. Get professional help if needed. Seek counseling or medication if sadness, anxiety or hopelessness are interfering with your life. There is no shame in getting support.

With consistent effort, you can take back your sense of motivation and purpose, even during the hardest times. Stay strong, focused and proactive – you got this!
