What the Watchers Actually Taught Humanity

What if the story you've been told about Noah's flood is incomplete? Most of us learned the simplified version: fallen angels called the Watchers descended, fathered a race of giants called the Nephilim, the world descended into violence, and God sent the flood to wipe it clean. But according to the most ancient manuscripts surrounding Genesis, that story may be missing the most damning piece of evidence.

Furthermore, multiple fragments of Enoch were discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls — not as curiosities, but as texts studied seriously by a devout Jewish community centuries before Christ. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church includes it in their biblical canon to this day.

We engage with it not as infallible revelation, but as a crucial piece of the ancient puzzle that gives Genesis 6 its full context. And when we do, the picture that emerges is extraordinary.

The Curriculum: What the Watchers Taught

In 1 Enoch chapters 7 and 8, we find not a vague reference to angelic misbehavior, but a specific, itemized list of teachings the Watchers delivered to humanity. This was not an accident of passion. It reads like a deliberate transfer of forbidden knowledge — a curriculum.

• I. Metallurgy & the Technology of WarAzazel taught humanity to make swords, knives, shields, and breastplates — the working of metals, precious stones, and dyes. Before this, conflict was primitive. After it, violence became industrialized: organized, efficient, and scalable.
• II. Cosmetic Arts & AdornmentThe same angel taught beautification through metals, gems, and dyes — the corruption of desire, the rise of vanity, and an identity built entirely on outward appearance and social status.
• III. Pharmacology & Occult PracticesSemyaza taught root-cutting and spells — early pharmacology intertwined with occultism. Hermmani taught sorcery and the dissolving of enchantments. This is the direct manipulation of natural and spiritual forces for personal power, a rejection of dependence on God.
• IV. Celestial Science & DivinationBarakiel taught astrology. Kokabel the constellations. Shamziel the signs of the sun. Sariel the course of the moon. This is the systematic revelation of the operating principles of creation itself — knowledge meant for angels, handed to fallen humanity without the moral framework to contain it.

Here is the critical insight: this knowledge is not inherently evil. God created the metals, the plants, the stars. The sin was in the source and the intent. Rebellious beings gave divine knowledge to humanity divorced from its divine context and moral purpose. That act turned science into sorcery, and understanding into a tool for domination.

The Flood Washed Away the People. Not the Knowledge.

If the flood was a divine reset of a corrupted knowledge system, it raises a troubling question: did the knowledge survive?

The Book of Jubilees — another Dead Sea Scrolls text, canonical for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church — provides a stunning answer. Now read the Tower of Babel story in Genesis 11 with fresh eyes. The people gather with unified language and unified purpose. Their stated goal is "to make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth." This is a direct rebellion against God's post-flood command in Genesis 9:1 to fill the earth. They used standardized brick and bitumen — advanced, organized construction that appears suddenly with no prior explanation in the biblical text.

The Babel project was the first major post-flood attempt to reconstitute the centralized, human-centric power structure that the Watchers' knowledge had made possible. God's response — the confusion of language — was a containment strategy. He broke the unified platform required to wield that knowledge at scale.

Early Genesis is not a series of disconnected stories. It is a continuous narrative about the containment of a corrupting knowledge. The pattern repeats, and it is deliberate.

Paul Saw It Too

The Apostle Paul in Romans 1 describes the spiritual descent of pagan humanity in terms that map precisely onto the Enochian curriculum. Humanity, though knowing God, "became futile in their thinking and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools… they worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator."

What is astrology but serving the creature — the stars — rather than the Creator? What is sorcery but the manipulation of natural forces for personal power rather than submission to God?
